Haiti Alert

The Ministry continues to be concerned about the devastation caused in Haiti due to the January 2010 earthquake. In particular, the Ministry wants to ensure that Haitian child welfare authorities have opportunity to re-establish a solid child protection system. Both the federal and provincial governments are aware of the continued interest of many families in adopting children from Haiti. We are attempting to obtain reliable information on the quality, legal safety and child welfare practices in that country.

Post-earthquake applications to adopt from Haiti are suspended. In keeping with international protocol, the majority of child welfare resources in Haiti should continue to be focused on re-establishing the child welfare structure of the nation. The government of British Columbia will continue to seek information from other international adoption authorities, the Canadian federal government and the Haitian government in regards to new post-earthquake adoption applications. This decision will continue to be reviewed at a 6 month and 1 year interval.
