Japan Alert
On March 11, 2011 an 8.9 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Japan spawned
a massive tsunami which caused massive destruction and extensive loss of life.
Typically, intercountry adoption should not take place in a situation of war
or natural disaster, given that these events make it impossible to verify
the personal and family situation of children. Any operation to adopt or to
evacuate children that are victims of the earthquake or tsunami to another
country must be absolutely avoided.
Licensed adoption agencies in BC may continue with adoptions that were in process prior to the earthquake and tsunami, however, it is likely all operations will be delayed due to the country focusing child welfare resources on displaced children.
