  Ukraine's Adoption Authority!
  • The Ukraine has a new adoption authority under the Ministry of Family, Youth, and Sports.
  • The new adoption authority in the Ukraine will be the State Department for Adoption and Protection for the Rights of the Child and will be replacing the National Adoption Center.
  • The department is expected to be operational as of July 1, 2006.
  • Pending cases: the department is still in the process of gathering and reviewing all the files from the National Adoption Center (the former adoption authority). Once the transition has been completed, the department will send letters to the prospective adoptive parents who have already applied advising them of the status of their case and details regarding interviews.
  • New applications can be submitted commencing January 1, 2007.
  • The Ukrainian government advises that the country is moving to a foster family program which will see fewer children placed in orphanages (and therefore fewer children available for adoption). Additionally, Ukraine is placing emphasis on increasing the number of domestic adoptions.
  • The Ukraine government also indicates prospective adoptive parents should be aware that the majority of children available for adoption in the Ukraine are over the age of 5 and may have special placement needs.
