Viet Nam Alert !
The Ministry of Children and Family
Development, Adoption Services would like to bring the following information
to the attention of adoptive parents who are considering adoption from
Vietnam.
- On June 27, 2005 Canada and the Socialist Republic
of Vietnam signed an agreement on Mutual Cooperation Concerning Adoptions.
- This agreement is an important first step toward resuming
adoption with Vietnam. The next step is for each province/territory
to ratify the Agreement. Following that, each province/territory will
be required to sign and implement an understanding with Vietnam. This
process will likely take several months.
The temporary term and condition placed on British Columbia
agency licenses disallowing them from participating in any adoption from
Vietnam except for those noted above will be removed as soon as a process
is in place. The Director of Adoption will continue to monitor and update
the information as received and once certain that procedures are in place
to support this agreement and safeguard the rights of children and their
families will update our information, inform our licensed agencies and
proceed.
Please note that although an agreement has been signed
between Vietnam and Canada, adoptions will not proceed until all requirements
are met and an Understanding is in place between Vietnam and the provinces/territories.
Information on this website will be updated as soon as British Columbia
is ready to proceed.
