The Watson Family
When Jane and Bill Watson decided to adopt, they were worried about their financial status. "We didn't have a large income," Jane explains, "and when we went to the ministry to talk about adopting, we expected them to say no."
Instead, the Watsons learned about the post adoption assistance program, which offers financial and other supports to families who adopt children with special needs - including older children and sibling groups. Eventually, they adopted three siblings at once, aged three, five and six.
The early months were difficult. The youngest had difficulty settling in. The oldest had serious behavioural challenges and the middle child blamed herself for problems with her birth parents. Life changed dramatically for Jane and Bill.
"With three kids, scheduling was a whole new experience," Jane says. "Our lifestyle changed." Nevertheless both the Watsons are quick to add that, overall, the experience has been extremely positive.
The children are now in their teens and Bill says, "It's been amazing, watching them grow into their security." He says the family's social worker played an important role in helping the children adjust to their new environment.
"For example, when the three-year old was running way, that was just heart-breaking," Bill recalls. "Jim [the social worker] suggested getting her a special Cuddle Teddy to help her feel secure, and that made a big difference." Bill says his youngest daughter still talks to Cuddle Teddy, even though she's quickly becoming a young woman. "And Jim is still there for us. We can phone him any time. Anyone who gets this social worker is blessed."
Looking back on their own experience, Jane and Bill have one piece of advice for those adopting - be patient and stick it out. "There will be good times and bad times," Jane says. "And you can expect more of the bad times at the beginning, so be prepared. In the end, though, it's worth every minute."
Bill agrees. "We'd definitely do it again," he says. In fact, the Watsons have applied to adopt again. This time, they expect the adjustment to be a little bit easier - but just as rewarding.
