Smoke-Free Environment Preference
Recently the ministry introduced a smoke-free policy for foster parents. A smoke-free environment means no smoking in the home or the family's vehicle. The policy does not apply to the use of tobacco for cultural or traditional purposes.
The ministry does not require adoptive parents to quit smoking. However, in the best interests of the child, there is a preference for adoptive families to provide a non-smoking environment.
The ministry recognizes that many prospective adoptive parents and family members are already mindful of the harmful effects of second-hand smoke and prohibit smoking in their homes. We hope to ensure a smoke-free environment for all children and youth in our care - through the foster care system and on into placement in their adoptive homes. It is our desire that all children in BC are afforded the right to live within a smoke-free environment.
When you avoid tobacco products and keep your home smoke-free, you are choosing a lifetime of health and well-being for your child/ren no matter how they have joined your family. View a presentation to see how tobacco harms children and youth.
