This video presents five families in British Columbia who adopted children prenatally exposed to alcohol. It shows the range of effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on the children's development, behaviours and needs at different ages.
The video explores some of the myths and stereotypes that have historically been attached to children and youth exposed to alcohol. It also shows that a range of appropriate of approaches is needed in parenting children prenatally exposed to alcohol. One of the video's messages is that with supports and services, one may already have the parenting skills that are necessary to parent these children, and if not, they can be learned. The families in this video show that successful adoptions happen when there are redefined expectations of all family members. Success is redefined in terms of valuing different qualities, achievements and abilities.
