Child Care Legacy Award

Child care programs play an important role in the early development of children and the support of families. The Child Care Legacy Award recognizes licensed child care programs in British Columbia that have provided services to children and families in their communities for more than 40 years. This award does not require a nomination.

Child Care Legacy Awards BGCCVI – Fifth Street Club
Located in Nanaimo, the Fifth Street Club is the oldest Boys and Girls Club in Central Vancouver Island. They continue to grow, working to create relationships for life through various community and family based programs.

Child Development Centre of Prince George and District
Started by parents of children with cerebral palsy and similar challenges, the Development Centre now provides quality special needs services through preschool programs, two group day cares and one multi-age group. The centre also creates practicum opportunities for students from local colleges and the university.

Countryside Preschool
Operating out of a church hall located in a beautiful rural valley, this 40-year parent participation preschool supports children in learning through play connected to nature, music and people of all ages.

Hobbit Hill Children’s Centre
One of the longest standing child care programs in the Kootenay region, Hobbit Hill Children’s Centre began operations in a rented CP Rail building. Over time, staffing has grown from three to 20 dedicated employees who provide child care services to children and families in the Castlegar area.

Lambrick Park Preschool and Child Care
A learning through play philosophy guides this child care centre, which is fully administered and maintained by the preschool’s families. Parents complete duty days in the classroom, where they are mentored by two qualified Early Childhood Educators.

Maple Ridge Adventure Preschool
Founded in 1972 by Jan and Agnes Wouterloot and set up as a non-profit society in 1980, the Maple Ridge Adventure Preschool Society has come a long way from their quaint old preschool building. Through the hard work of many dedicated volunteers the modern facility is safe, roomy and serves over 80 children every year.

Oak Bay Parent Owned Preschool
Located in the heart of Oak Bay, the preschool offers a welcoming environment for children to learn and develop. Parents are involved in the first years of their child’s schooling through personal participation in all aspects of the school’s operations.

Quesnel and District Day Care Society
Started in the local Anglican Church, the society’s centre now has a preschool program, playground and other upgrades. Today, families access services provided by three staff members with a collective 53 years of experience.

St. Matthews Day Care Society
Serving families in South Burnaby for the past 40 years, St. Matthews Day Care Society now cares for around 100 children, ages four months to 12 years. Preschool alumni often come back to say hello to staff—and register their own children for day care.

Simon Fraser University Child Care Society – Kahpoo Infant Centre
Deriving its name from a Northwest Coast Aboriginal word meaning “little children”, for many years, Kahpoo was the only infant centre that “napped” their infants outdoors daily in sun, rain and snow. Today, the educators provide a unique program for the infants through sensory and art activities that include working with clay, paint and water.

Sunset Preschool and Out of School Care
The Sunset Preschool and Out of School Care organization serves families in a diverse, multicultural neighbourhood. Their work is supported by experienced staff, a dedicated board, civic grants, child care operating funding and families.

University of British Columbia Canada Goose Daycare and Tillicum Daycare Centres
Canada Goose “under three” and Tillicum “3 to 5” originally resided in World War II army huts on the north side of the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus. The programs moved into new buildings in 1991, and UBC Child Care Services is now the largest campus-based child care program and employer-sponsored child care service in North America.

University of Victoria Out of School Care
The University of Victoria’s Out of School Care (OSC), also known as Centre 6, started on campus in a white hilltop farm house with picturesque views. When the OSC became licensed 40 years ago, it moved to its current location surrounded by forest, beaches, fields and playgrounds. Centre 6 now serves 50 children, ages five to twelve.

Williams Lake & District Daycare Centre
Through a series of expansions and renovations, the Williams Lake & District Daycare Centre has grown from its origins in a local church basement to a large centre that prides itself on being an extension of the family.
