Early Language & Literacy

In this section, you will find information and links to cross-government early language and literacy initiatives.

Ready, Set, Learn is an early childhood initiative which provides an opportunity for elementary schools offering kindergarten to partner with community-based early childhood services providers to influence school readiness in children. Events include a tour of the school, visits to classrooms, activities for the children, refreshments, displays or any other elements that are appropriate to the school and community.

Schools provide a free kit of materials geared for families of preschoolers attending the events, including:

  • an age-appropriate book for the child; and
  • a parent/family kit with a booklet of helpful tips for supporting their preschooler's learning and development.

The Ministry of Children and Family Development, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health, is providing resources to support a series of Ready, Set, Learn events in local schools.

Other Early Language and Literacy resources include:

Parent Child Mother Goose promotes parent-infant relationships using rhymes, stories and songs. In 2005, over 3000 families participated in Parent Child Mother Goose programs throughout 48 BC communities. For more information click here.
