Respite Services
The Care Plan is not an endpoint in the journey of care and treatment of troubled youth. One thing we know from experience is that we can expect there to be rough spots along the way. We also know that multiple "failures" of placements are disruptive and damaging for the youth's growth and development. This is why the Respite Program was developed.
Frequently, when the youth, caregivers, or community system is stressed, a brief period of respite can allow everyone to cool down, regroup, and then resume. The Respite Program is intended to provide a "safety valve" function in order to prevent placement breakdowns, to preserve relationships, and to build a sense of competence and belonging in the family rather than failure and rejection. Periods of respite can range from a few days to two weeks.
The Respite Program is not an emergency placement. Indeed, it can often take several weeks to arrange respite as there are a limited number of beds set aside for respite services and the demand fluctuates. To use the respite option effectively, you must plan ahead. Respite can be used more than once but it must be used carefully as resources are limited.
To arrange respite, contact your Care Plan Consultant and/or your Case Manager. If you choose to contact only the Care Plan Consultant, that person will need to consult with your Case Manager prior to confirming any arrangements. Your Case Manager should expect to be asked some questions about their rationale, goals, and planning behind the request.
