Services for Family and Community Development (SFCD) is a bilingual (ASL and English) provincial resource program for families with children age 5 – 19 who require language rich environments in the home and community. See attached Info Sheet.

Families are children’s first and most important teachers.
We recognize that families have the most important role in the lives of children. We support families with strategies to enhance children’s language and literacy development at home and in the community.

The most important thing? Have fun!
Learning in a safe environment, sharing positive experiences, creating meaningful connections, and having fun are the most important things of all.

SFCD provides:

Language Living, Language Learning - In ASL-English bilingual classes, families learn how to connect day-to-day experiences with rich language learning. A children’s program accompanies these classes with parallel language learning experiences.

Parents Reading, Children Succeeding - With support from language mentors, families apply Language Living, Language Learning through interactive adventures in reading and storytelling.

Family Roots - A four - to eight-week intervention program teaching parents specific essential skill(s), supporting their child’s language development in the home and community.

Partnerships in Language - SFCD values community collaborations. Past collaborations include the Hands Talkin’ Tent at Vancouver International Children’s Festival; Deaf Storytelling at the Burnaby Public Library; Deaf Culture presentations in schools.

Hot Topics give parents an opportunity to learn more about a topic with a special guest speaker. Past workshops have covered: Parent Advocacy; Body Signs; Registered Disability Savings Plan; Deaf Children and Literacy. If you have any suggestions, please let us know!

Youth Development provides a supportive environment for growth and learning. We are offering Discovery Journey and monthly social opportunities.

Family Summer Immersion is an opportunity for families to come together from all corners of the province for a week-long intensive learning experience in Burnaby.

Outreach services are available to families who live outside the Lower Mainland when resources are available. We value community partnerships.

Parent-Coaching focuses on enhancing existing strengths and skills while encouraging parents to find their own solutions to parenting questions and enabling them to create a balance in their personal lives. Parent-Coaching sessions focus on present challenges and brainstorming possible solutions and the goal is for parents to identify their values and beliefs and become the parents they wish to be. Parent Coaching sessions range from 6-8 weeks of skill development and is offered in the home.
