Interior Regional Profile
The Interior Region encompasses the former Ministry of Children and Family Development regions of Thompson-Cariboo, Okanagan and Kootenay. The region covers 215,346 square kilometers, 23% of the total area of BC, and is home to 17% of the provincial population.
The region provides services such as child protection, youth justice, early childhood development, adoption, family supports, child and youth mental health, and services to children with special needs and adults with developmental disabilities. There was a total of 577.58 Full-Time Equivalents (FTEs) budgeted in the Interior Region in 2006/07, which translates to approximately 650 employees in regular or auxiliary status.
In 2006, the Interior had 103,665 families with children at home, the total child population being 145,852. Based on the 2001 Census, 7.4% of the population in the Interior Region indicated that they are of Aboriginal origin (compared to 5.6% in BC), the highest proportion being in the Cariboo-Chilcotin area (19%)."
