The Vancouver Island Region consists of both small to large urban and many rural communities. The Region comprises approximately 16.6% of the province's estimated population.
There are 41 First Nations represented within the Vancouver Island Region, and includes people living on and off Reserve. The Aboriginal population, based on the 2001 Census (Statistics Canada), is 43,420, which is 20% of the province's total Aboriginal population.
The region has approximately 486 positions in 22 offices located across the region. The region spent approximately $115 million in 2003/2004 providing services such as child protection, youth justice, early childhood development, adoption, family supports, child and youth mental health, and services to children with special needs and adults with developmental disabilities.
