Burnaby Youth Custody Services Centre

The Burnaby Youth Justice Services Centre (BYJSC) is a project to replace Burnaby Youth Custody Services and Youth Forensic Psychiatric Services through the renovation of the existing 1989 Women’s Correctional Centre in Burnaby BC. The renovated facility is comprised of 84 beds for Burnaby Youth Custody Services and 6 beds for Youth Forensic Psychiatric Services’ residents. The project has maintained the existing 7 functional building blocks while renovating portions of the existing space to accommodate the differing program requirements of Youth Custody Services and Youth Forensic Psychiatric Services. One of the goals of this project is to be the first correctional facility to achieve certification in the LEED Canada green building rating system.

An integrated design process was initiated at the outset of the project involving users and the design consultant team. The collective input from this process was instrumental in the decision to renovate the existing women’s facility instead of constructing a new facility on a different site. Once a final decision was made to renovate, significant efforts were made toward avoiding new construction and using only the available existing space to accommodate the two programs.

The chosen strategies required significant interdisciplinary coordination between the client, design, and construction teams in order to be appropriately implemented as part of the custody facility. In addition to LEED, green design ideas were drawn from a broad scope of sources including the Green Guidelines for Healthcare.
